The African Cultural Foundation has hosted several thoughtful cinema events that combine film screenings with reflection, discussion, and community exchange. These events explore themes of identity, culture, history, and representation, creating spaces for critical dialogue and communal learning.

“Unpacking the White Gaze: OMEN Film Screening and Panel Discussion” (June 2024) — This event presented the film OMEN and was followed by a panel discussion with experts in film studies, cultural representation, and critical race theory. Participants engaged in a powerful conversation on the ways global cinema frames African stories, interrogating narratives, stereotypes, and the politics of the gaze.

“A Night of Reflection and Dialogue: DAHOMEY Screening and Panel Discussion” (January 2025) — The screening of the documentary DAHOMEY was accompanied by an interactive discussion on history, restitution, and identity, encouraging audiences to reflect on historical memory and contemporary cultural narratives. The dialogue emphasized the importance of storytelling as a vehicle for healing and cultural understanding.

Black History Month Event — My Father’s Shadow & Community Discussion (February 2026) — This program showcased contemporary African cinema while facilitating a community-led conversation on masculinity, culture, and belonging. By centering African voices and lived experiences, the event fostered a safe and engaging environment for critical reflection and shared learning.
Collectively, these initiatives demonstrate ACF’s commitment to using film as a medium for cultural expression, critical inquiry, and community engagement, bridging artistic, social, and educational boundaries while amplifying African narratives in Austria and beyond.
